I was born and brought up in a small business environment, and the needs and interests of small businesses have been in my blood for a lifetime. My first entrepreneurial ventures developed while still in grade school and expanded into profitable freelance ventures in high school and college. After stints working in various advertising and marketing capacities (including newspapers, a city magazine, radio, and a year as a corporate marketing director), I founded my current company in 1980.
Until the mid-1990’s, Pelland Advertising’s primary concentration was the production and printing of four-color process collateral advertising. Our first clients were small to medium-sized ski areas from throughout the Northeastern United States. Due to the seasonal nature of that industry (and its year-to-year survival based upon the weather), I built complementary markets within the amusement park and family camping industries (the latter of which has proven itself to be much larger and more stable). Family campgrounds now constitute a major share of our overall client base. Since some point in 1997, my company (which had already gone all digital in its print advertising production) expanded into a second major area of concentration: Website development and hosting services.
From Day 1, Pelland Advertising has been committed to serving the needs of small businesses of all types, a determination which has grown all the more essential in this age of increasing threats to the health and survival of small firms in the shadow of Wal-Mart. If you are determined to see your business succeed in today’s competitive environment, I am determined to be an essential ingredient that will help to insure that success.

My Green Mission
At Pelland Advertising, our two primary product / service lines are website development and four-color collateral advertising production. Our green commitment has consistently led to ever-greater efficiencies throughout the entire production process and workflow. Our printing is now done with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) vendors, printing on paper stocks with post-consumer recycled content, soy-based inks, chemical-free plates, and non-VOC solvents. All aluminum printing plates are fully recycled. Our proofing processes are now fully digital and online, eliminating the use of proofing chemicals and raw materials, as well as the environmental costs for the transportation of proofs to and from our clients.
Although our roots were in the design and printing of brochures and rack cards back in 1980, it is clear that Internet usage is steadily displacing the consumption of printed materials, a fact which, in itself, is good for the environment in the long run (despite the environmental concerns associated with the manufacture, usage, and ultimate disposal of computer equipment and peripherals). Our company began building commercial websites in the mid-1990’s. In terms of website development and our overall office practices, Pelland Advertising’s environmental standards are second to none. The construction of our new home-based office in 1998 met or exceeded Advanced Energy Star standards, with such features as high-efficiency windows with higher “R” values than the walls in most conventional construction, and a geothermal heating and cooling system that was fully operational 10 years before the concept hit the public consciousness. As a result, our office heating and cooling uses no fossil fuel other than the small amount of electricity which is required to run the system’s pump, compressor and blower.
Our offices went “paperless” in 2005, with all accounting and proofing now done online, eliminating the use of paper and the pollution associated with transportation. Any paper which must be used in-house, is re-used and then shredded and recycled. Virtually all of our computer equipment and monitors have been upgraded during this time period, with all equipment now Energy Star rated. Almost all lighting is compact fluorescent; however, our offices have a “lights out” lighting policy during daytime hours, eliminating even that reduced amount of energy consumption. Over the last 6 months in 2008, our monthly energy consumption has decreased by 20-25% from the same months in 2007.
Our company supports a wide range of environmental initiatives, including its advocacy on behalf of the Cape Wind project and its proposal to build the country's first off-shore wind farm, with 130 wind turbines in Nantucket Sound.
